What moves your number from there is the count of doors and windows worth covering, whether the house is single or double storey, whether it is pre-wired, and whether you want monitoring on top. A starting price assumes the easy version of the job, a pre-wired single storey with short cable runs, which is why we confirm it after walking the building. The visit costs nothing, and the quote is the price.

Opportunistic ones do, and they are most of them. What deters someone is evidence the house is harder work than the one next door: a visible external siren, a keypad they can see through the front glass, sensor placement that means the easy side entry is covered. A sticker alone does not do it. Neither does an alarm nobody arms, which is why we spend time making arming a one-action habit on the way out.

There is no single best panel, and anyone naming one is describing what they stock. Bosch, Paradox and Hills panels all do the job well. What separates a good install from a bad one is where the sensors went and whether the system was commissioned properly. The same panel can be excellent or useless depending on that.

Yes, and it is worth being clear about what that gets you. An unmonitored alarm has no ongoing cost at all: it sounds the siren and lights the flasher box, and that is the whole service. It does not send you anything, so it works by making noise where someone can hear it. Getting alerts on your phone properly is a self-monitoring subscription at $200 a year + GST. Some panels do ship with a free app, and it is worth knowing what the free tier costs you instead: the notification arrives on a delay, which is the one thing an alarm alert cannot afford to be. The paid subscription is near real time. Back to base, where a staffed centre sees the signal and works through your call list at 3am, starts at $1,400 a year + GST. They are separate services rather than tiers, so back to base does not include the phone alerts and plenty of people take both. We install any combination of the three and will tell you honestly which fits how you actually live.

Often, yes. If the panel is a current model and the cabling is sound we extend it. If it is a twenty-year-old board with no parts available we will say so rather than sell you repairs that will not last.
